Kadence WordPress theme free download and setup guide cover, MIVAQ

Kadence has quietly become the theme many WordPress professionals recommend when someone asks, “What should I use if I want to build with blocks, not Elementor?” It combines a generous free header and footer builder, a sensible global colour system and a close partnership with the Kadence Blocks plugin. If you are looking for the Kadence WordPress theme free download, this guide shows you the official source, the installation steps, and a setup plan that avoids the usual beginner traps.

This article is part of our complete guide: How to Build a WordPress Website for Your Business (2026 Guide).

Kadence is 100% free and legal to download from WordPress.org. There is an optional Pro add-on, but the free theme is not a trial or a cut-down demo. Plenty of polished business sites run entirely on free Kadence plus free Kadence Blocks.

We use Kadence at MIVAQ for clients who want to edit their own pages comfortably in the block editor after handover. The notes below come from that hands-on work.

What is the Kadence WordPress theme?

Kadence is a lightweight, classic (Customizer-based) theme that was created by Kadence WP and is now listed on WordPress.org under Nexcess, part of the StellarWP family. It is built to be fast and accessible, and it carries the “Accessibility ready” tag in the directory, meaning it passed the review team’s accessibility checks for things like keyboard navigation and skip links. Its focus is giving you strong design controls without code, then letting the block editor handle page content.

Key features of Kadence

  • Free drag-and-drop header builder: three header rows with flexible element placement, plus a separate mobile header and off-canvas menu.
  • Transparent and sticky header options: overlay the header on a hero image or keep it fixed while scrolling, configured in the Customizer.
  • Footer builder: up to three footer rows with widgets, menus, social icons and copyright text.
  • Global colour palette: a named palette (accent, contrast, base colours) that both the theme and Kadence Blocks read, so blocks always match your brand.
  • Global typography with Google Fonts: plus an option to load fonts locally for privacy and speed.
  • Starter templates: full site designs through the free Kadence Starter Templates plugin, for both blocks and Elementor.
  • Accessibility ready: skip links, focus styles and keyboard-friendly menus.
  • WooCommerce styling: product archive and single-product layout settings, with cart and checkout that look tidy by default.
  • Per-post layout options: control title, sidebar, content width and transparent header on any page.

The global palette that blocks understand

The standout feature for us is how Kadence’s palette connects to the block editor. Palette slots like “Accent”, “Contrast” and “Base” appear in every colour picker. Change the accent colour once and every button, heading highlight and Kadence Block that used it updates instantly. This is the cleanest way we know to keep a non-technical client’s site on-brand.

Kadence Blocks as a page-building partner

Kadence Blocks is a separate free plugin that adds rows with columns, advanced headings, buttons, tabs, accordions, forms, icon lists and more. With it, the block editor feels close to a page builder, but the output stays lighter because everything is native blocks. You do not have to use it, but Kadence is at its best when paired with it.

Starter templates with real structure

The starter template library includes designs for coaches, local services, restaurants, shops and agencies. You can import a full site or single pages, and the importer applies the template’s palette and fonts to the Customizer so the design stays consistent after import.

Kadence free vs Pro: what do you get?

Free Kadence already gives you the header and footer builder, transparent and sticky headers, palette, typography, blog layouts and WooCommerce basics, which is more than many themes include for free. Kadence Pro is an add-on plugin that unlocks extra header elements (such as additional buttons, HTML areas and secondary menus), conditional headers, a mega menu, Hooked Elements for inserting content into theme locations, extra WooCommerce features, a dark mode switch, custom fonts and script management.

Kadence is also sold in bundles with Kadence Blocks Pro and other tools. Bundles and prices change, so check the developer’s site for current Pro pricing. For most brochure sites the free combination of Kadence theme plus Kadence Blocks is enough.

Who should use Kadence?

  • Block editor fans who want a page-builder feel without installing Elementor.
  • Businesses that will edit their own site after launch and need a simple, consistent system.
  • Accessibility-minded organisations such as charities, schools and public services.
  • Small to medium WooCommerce shops that want neat product pages without a heavy theme.
  • Agencies who want reusable patterns and a predictable workflow.

Kadence is less ideal if you are fully committed to building every part of the site in the Site Editor with block templates; a true block theme is more natural there. It is also not the best pick if you want a huge, Astra-sized marketplace of third-party tutorials and templates.

Kadence WordPress theme free download (official and safe)

Get Kadence only from the official directory:

Never install “Kadence Pro free download” or “nulled” bundles from third-party sites. They often include hidden code that creates admin users, injects spam or redirects visitors, and you will not get updates or support. If you suspect an infected site, read our guide to WordPress malware removal. MIVAQ does not distribute theme files; the free download always comes from WordPress.org.

How to install Kadence in WordPress (step by step)

Method 1: from your dashboard

  1. Go to Appearance › Themes › Add New Theme.
  2. Search for “Kadence”.
  3. Click Install on the Kadence card, then Activate.
  4. Follow the dashboard notice if you want to install Kadence Starter Templates.

Method 2: upload the ZIP

  1. Download kadence.zip from the official link.
  2. Go to Appearance › Themes › Add New Theme › Upload Theme.
  3. Select the file, click Install Now, then Activate.

Child theme tip: Kadence provides a ready-made child theme you can download from its website. Install it if you plan to add custom PHP or template overrides, so theme updates never erase your work.

How to set up Kadence after installation

Kadence settings live in Appearance › Customize, and there is also a Kadence dashboard page under Appearance. A practical setup order:

  1. Install Kadence Blocks. Even if you do not import a template, this plugin gives you rows, advanced buttons and forms in the editor.
  2. Optional template import. Install Kadence Starter Templates, choose “Blocks” or “Elementor”, preview designs, and import either the full site or selected pages on a fresh install.
  3. Define the palette. Customize › Colors & Fonts › Colors. Set accent colours for buttons and links, contrast colours for text, and base colours for backgrounds.
  4. Fonts. Choose base and heading fonts; consider enabling local Google Fonts loading for faster pages and fewer third-party requests.
  5. Header. Open Header, drag the logo, navigation and a button into place, enable sticky or transparent header if your design needs it, and configure the mobile header and off-canvas drawer.
  6. Footer. Add contact details, a short menu and social links.
  7. General layout. Set content width, sidebar defaults, and blog archive and single-post styles.
  8. Homepage and menus. Create the homepage with Kadence Blocks, set it in Settings › Reading and assign menus.

If you add WooCommerce later, a WooCommerce section appears in the Customizer for product archive columns and single-product layout.

Kadence speed and SEO checklist

Common mistakes when setting up Kadence

  • Using hex codes instead of palette colours. Blocks with hard-coded colours do not update when you rebrand.
  • Importing a full template over existing content. Import single pages instead, or work on staging.
  • Adding Elementor on top of Kadence Blocks “just for one page”. It adds weight across the site.
  • Forgetting transparent header contrast. White menu text over a light hero image becomes unreadable.
  • Skipping the mobile drawer settings. Default mobile menus may not match your brand until configured.

Kadence vs similar free WordPress themes

Theme Best for Key difference
Kadence Block-based business sites Generous free header options and tight Kadence Blocks integration
Astra Template-heavy and Elementor sites Bigger template library and community
Blocksy Design-led sites and stores Modern defaults and powerful companion plugin
Neve Lightweight small business sites Very lean with useful Starter Sites from Themeisle

Choose Kadence if you want to build mainly with blocks and need sticky or transparent headers without paying. Choose Astra if you depend on Elementor templates. Choose Blocksy if you love its design defaults and WooCommerce extras. Choose Neve if you want a very minimal starting point.

Kadence pros and cons

What we like

  • One of the most generous free header builders available.
  • Palette system that keeps blocks on-brand.
  • Accessibility ready and fast by default.
  • Clean starter templates for blocks and Elementor.

What to consider

  • Works best alongside Kadence Blocks, which means one more plugin to maintain.
  • Conditional headers and hooked elements require Pro.
  • Smaller tutorial ecosystem than Astra.

Our verdict: Kadence is our favourite free theme for block editor builds. If you or your team will maintain the site yourselves, its palette and blocks make everyday edits safe and simple.
