Getting Wix Payments and your other payment methods set up correctly is the moment your website stops being a catalogue and becomes a business. It is also where many new store owners get stuck: verification requests, payouts on hold, a PayPal button that never appears, or a checkout that shows the wrong currency. This guide explains how payments on Wix work, how to connect Wix Payments step by step, which alternative providers and manual methods you can add, and how to test everything before a real customer tries to pay.

Key takeaways

  • You need a Wix plan that supports accepting payments before any payment method will work at checkout.
  • Wix Payments is Wix’s built-in processor; availability, supported methods and fees depend on your country.
  • You can add third-party providers such as PayPal and manual methods such as bank transfer or cash on delivery alongside it.
  • Complete identity and bank verification early so payouts are not delayed.
  • Always run a real low-value test transaction and a refund before launch.

How do payments work on Wix?

Every Wix business app that takes money, including Wix Stores, Wix Bookings, Wix Events, Pricing Plans and Wix Restaurants, uses the same central Accept Payments area in your dashboard. You connect payment providers there once, and they become available across all those apps. That is a big advantage: a salon selling products and appointments, for example, manages one set of payment settings.

There are three building blocks:

  • A premium plan that accepts payments. Without it, the checkout cannot process orders. Compare current options on the official Wix plans page or read our explanation of which Wix plan you need.
  • At least one payment provider, such as Wix Payments, PayPal or another supported processor in your region.
  • Correct business details: legal name, address, currency and bank account, which the provider uses for verification and payouts.

What is Wix Payments?

Wix Payments is Wix’s own payment processor. Where it is available, it lets you accept major credit and debit cards and, depending on your country, other methods such as digital wallets and local payment options, all managed from your Wix dashboard. Payouts go to your connected bank account on a schedule, and you can see transactions, refunds and disputes in one place.

Option Best for Pros Things to check
Wix Payments Most stores in supported countries Built in, single dashboard, works across all Wix apps Country availability, verification, payout schedule
PayPal Shoppers who prefer not to enter card details Familiar and trusted by many buyers Separate account and fees, buyer leaves or overlays checkout
Other third-party processors Regions where Wix Payments is not offered, or specific business needs More choice and local methods Which providers are supported in your country
Manual payments Bank transfer, cash on delivery, pay in person No processing fee from Wix You must confirm payment yourself before shipping

Because supported countries, methods and fees change, always confirm the current details in the Wix Payments section of the Wix Help Center before you decide. We deliberately do not quote fees here, because they vary by country and change over time.

How to set up Wix Payments: step by step

Here is the general flow. Wording in the dashboard may differ slightly depending on your region and when you read this.

  1. Upgrade to a plan that accepts payments if you have not already.
  2. Go to Settings, then Accept Payments in your site dashboard.
  3. Check your business location and currency. These decide which providers and methods you can use, and they are hard to change later.
  4. Choose Wix Payments and select Set up. Enter your business type (individual, sole trader, company), legal name and contact details exactly as they appear on official documents.
  5. Add identity information for the account owner and, for companies, any required representatives.
  6. Connect your bank account for payouts. Use an account in the business’s name where possible.
  7. Submit any documents requested, such as proof of identity or address. Respond quickly; incomplete verification is the main cause of payout holds.
  8. Enable the payment methods you want to show, such as cards and available wallets.
  9. Customise how your business name appears on card statements so customers recognise the charge and do not dispute it.
  10. Run a real test order and refund it (see the testing section below).

Which other payment methods can you add?

PayPal

Many shoppers trust PayPal and some will abandon a checkout without it. Connect your PayPal business account in Accept Payments. Make sure the email address and currency match, and confirm the PayPal button appears at checkout on both desktop and mobile.

Other card processors

Depending on your country, Wix supports a range of third-party processors. If Wix Payments is not available where you are based, or you already use a specific provider for your physical shop, connect that instead. The list of supported providers differs by location, so check it inside your own dashboard.

Buy now, pay later

In some regions you can offer pay-later or instalment options through Wix Payments or partner providers. These can help with higher-priced products, but check eligibility and how refunds are handled before enabling them.

Manual payments

Manual methods let customers place an order and pay offline: bank transfer, cash on delivery, cheque or payment in person. Write clear instructions (account details, reference to use, deadline) and only fulfil once payment is confirmed. Manual payments are useful for local businesses and B2B orders.

In-person payments

If you also sell face to face, Wix offers point-of-sale options in some countries, so in-store and online sales share one inventory and one order list. This is especially useful for shops and service businesses.

How to choose the right payment mix

More options do not always mean more sales; too many buttons can confuse buyers. A sensible starting point for most small stores is:

  • Cards through your main processor (Wix Payments where available).
  • One familiar wallet or PayPal for shoppers who prefer it.
  • A pay-later option only if your average order value is high.
  • A manual method only if your audience genuinely needs it (for example, local delivery with cash payment).

Watch your analytics after launch. If many visitors reach checkout but do not pay, the payment step may be the problem. Our guide on how to increase sales on your Wix store covers checkout optimisation in more detail, and abandoned cart recovery helps you win back those lost orders.

How to test your Wix checkout

Never assume payments work just because the dashboard says “connected”. Run this test:

  1. Create a low-priced hidden test product, or temporarily lower the price of a real one.
  2. Open your live site in a private browser window, add the product to the cart and check out as a customer.
  3. Pay with a real card and, separately, with each other method you enabled.
  4. Confirm you receive the order notification and the customer receives the confirmation email.
  5. Check the order shows the right tax and shipping amounts.
  6. Refund the order from the dashboard and confirm the refund email is sent.
  7. Delete or hide the test product and restore any changed prices.

Also check that tax and shipping totals are correct at this stage. If they are not, review our guides to Wix shipping settings and setting up taxes on your Wix store.

Common payment problems and how to fix them

  1. Checkout says the store cannot accept payments. Usually the site is not on a plan that accepts payments, or no provider is connected.
  2. Payouts are on hold. Verification is incomplete or documents do not match the details entered. Check for requests in your Wix Payments account.
  3. A payment method is missing at checkout. It may not be supported in the buyer’s country or currency, or it was not enabled.
  4. Wrong currency. The site currency was set incorrectly at setup. Fix it before taking orders, as changing it later can be restricted.
  5. Customers dispute charges they do not recognise. Set a clear statement descriptor that matches your brand name.
  6. Manual orders shipped before payment arrives. Mark manual orders as unpaid until you confirm the money, and only fulfil paid orders.

Payment setup checklist: plan that accepts payments, correct business location and currency, provider connected and verified, bank account added, methods enabled, statement descriptor set, test order paid and refunded, emails checked, policies linked at checkout.
