Build a Wix Auto Parts Store with YMM Search – MIVAQ Wix guide cover

This article is part of our complete Wix guide.

Selling car parts online lives or dies on one question: “Will this fit my vehicle?” A Wix auto parts store can answer it with Year/Make/Model (YMM) search, where shoppers choose their vehicle and see only the parts that fit. Standard Wix Stores filters were not designed for this, because one part can fit hundreds of vehicles and one vehicle can use thousands of parts. This guide explains how to plan fitment data, the options for adding YMM search to Wix, how to build it with the CMS and Velo, and how to turn vehicle pages into a source of search traffic.

Key takeaways

  • Fitment data (which part fits which vehicles) is the foundation; get the structure right before designing anything.
  • Your options are a dedicated YMM app, a custom build with the Wix CMS and Velo, or simple make/model categories for very small catalogues.
  • MIVAQ’s Year/Make/Model parts finder app for Wix is in development to make this easier for parts sellers.
  • Show a clear “fits your vehicle” confirmation on product pages to reduce returns.
  • Vehicle and category landing pages can rank for searches like “brake pads for [model]” if each has useful, unique content.

Why Year/Make/Model search matters for parts stores

Parts shoppers arrive with a vehicle in mind, not a product name. Someone needing brake pads for a 2016 Ford Focus does not want to scroll through every brake pad you sell and read compatibility notes. A YMM selector, usually three or four dropdowns at the top of the site, narrows the catalogue to parts that fit. The benefits are practical:

  • Fewer wrong orders and returns, which protect your margin and your reviews.
  • Higher conversion, because customers find the right part quickly and buy with confidence.
  • Fewer “will this fit?” emails for your team to answer.
  • Repeat visits, especially if the site remembers the customer’s vehicle.

Many stores also add an engine or trim level as a fourth step, because parts such as filters, belts and suspension often differ between engine sizes of the same model.

How to plan your fitment data

Fitment data links products to vehicles. Think of it as three tables:

Table Contains Example
Vehicles Year, make, model, and optionally engine or trim 2016 / Ford / Focus / 1.0 EcoBoost
Products Your Wix Stores products with SKU, brand, price, images Front brake pad set, SKU BP-2231
Fitment One row per product-vehicle match, with notes BP-2231 fits 2014–2018 Ford Focus, all engines

Where does the data come from? Many suppliers and manufacturers provide fitment spreadsheets. In North America, the ACES (fitment) and PIES (product information) standards are widely used for exchanging this data. In the UK and Europe, some sellers also use registration-plate lookup services from data providers to identify a vehicle before matching parts. Whatever the source, plan for:

  • Year ranges stored efficiently (a start and end year) rather than one row per year where possible.
  • Consistent naming, so “VW” and “Volkswagen” are not treated as two makes.
  • Universal parts such as wiper fluid or tools that fit everything and should always appear.
  • Fitment notes such as “models with rear disc brakes only”.
  • Regular updates as suppliers add new vehicles and parts.

Good collection design matters as much as the search widget. Our explainer on Wix CMS and dynamic pages covers reference fields and collection structure in more detail.

Ways to add YMM search to a Wix store

Option 1: A dedicated Year/Make/Model app

A purpose-built app gives you a dashboard to import fitment data and a ready-made search widget. MIVAQ is developing its own Year/Make/Model parts finder app for Wix, based on our experience building fitment search for parts sellers on other platforms. It is in development; follow progress or register interest on our MIVAQ apps for Wix page. You can also search the Wix App Market for other fitment tools and compare how they import data, handle large catalogues and display results.

Option 2: Custom build with the Wix CMS and Velo

For stores with special requirements, such as unusual vehicle types (motorbikes, trucks, agricultural or marine), a fourth or fifth selection level, or integration with a supplier feed, a custom build gives full control. It uses CMS collections for vehicles and fitment, cascading dropdowns, and Velo code to filter Wix Stores products. We explain the steps below.

Option 3: Make and model categories

A very small catalogue that serves a handful of models can use Wix Stores categories such as “Ford Focus parts”. It is simple, but it breaks down quickly: one product fitting forty models needs forty category assignments, and there is no year or engine logic. Use it only as a stepping stone.

Not sure which route suits your catalogue size and budget? Our Wix eCommerce team can review your data and recommend the most practical option.

How to build YMM search with the Wix CMS and Velo

Here is the high-level process we follow for custom builds. It requires Velo by Wix knowledge.

  1. Set up Wix Stores with products, SKUs, images and prices. Our guide to adding products and variants in Wix Stores covers this.
  2. Create a Vehicles collection with year, make, model and engine fields, or separate Makes and Models collections linked by reference fields.
  3. Create a Fitment collection linking product SKUs (or product references) to vehicles, with start year, end year and notes.
  4. Import data via CSV, cleaning names and removing duplicates first.
  5. Add cascading dropdowns to the header or homepage: choosing a year loads makes available for that year, choosing a make loads models, and so on. Each list is built with a wix-data query using distinct values.
  6. Run the search on the backend. When the shopper clicks Find Parts, a backend function finds matching fitment rows and returns the list of product IDs, which keeps heavy queries off the visitor’s device.
  7. Display results in a repeater connected to the matching products, with filters for category, brand and price.
  8. Remember the vehicle for the session (or in a member’s “My garage”) so it carries across pages.
  9. Test performance with your full catalogue, not a sample, on mobile data.

Large catalogues need care: Wix data queries return results in pages, so very large fitment tables require efficient queries, indexes where available and sensible caching. This is where experience saves weeks.

Fitment on product pages, cart and checkout

Search is only half of the experience. Customers also arrive on product pages from Google or ads without using the selector. Make fitment visible everywhere:

  • Fitment badge: when a vehicle is selected, show “Fits your 2016 Ford Focus” or “Does not fit your vehicle” near the add to cart button.
  • Fitment table: list compatible vehicles on the product page, collapsed by make if the list is long.
  • Notes and part numbers: show OE and cross-reference numbers, since many shoppers search by part number.
  • Cart reminder: show the selected vehicle in the cart so mistakes are caught before payment.
  • Clear returns policy for incorrect fitment, which builds trust.

These details also lift conversion; see our tips to increase sales on your Wix store for more.

SEO for auto parts stores on Wix

Parts searches are specific: “front brake pads 2016 Ford Focus”, “oil filter Golf 1.6 TDI”, or a part number. Your store can rank for these with the right structure:

  • Vehicle landing pages built as dynamic pages, such as /parts/ford/focus, listing popular categories for that model with unique introductory text. Avoid generating thousands of near-empty year pages.
  • Category pages per vehicle for your best sellers, such as brake parts for a popular model.
  • Product titles that include brand, part type and key fitment where natural.
  • Part numbers in text on product pages so searches by number can find you.
  • Structured data for products. See Wix structured data and schema.
  • Helpful guides such as “how to tell if your brake pads need replacing”, linking to relevant categories.

Our full guide to Wix eCommerce SEO covers product and category optimisation in depth.

Common mistakes when building a parts store

  • Designing before the data is ready, then discovering the fitment file does not match the planned structure.
  • Inconsistent vehicle names creating duplicate makes and models in dropdowns.
  • Hiding universal parts when a vehicle is selected.
  • Slow searches because heavy queries run in the browser.
  • Thousands of thin vehicle pages that Google ignores.
  • No fitment message on product pages, so search visitors still order the wrong part.

Auto parts store launch checklist

  • Fitment data cleaned, standardised and imported
  • YMM selector works on desktop and mobile
  • Results load quickly with the full catalogue
  • Fitment badge and table on every product page
  • Vehicle shown in cart; returns policy clear
  • Vehicle landing pages with unique content
  • Analytics tracking searches and purchases
