“Is Wix bad for SEO?” is a question we hear every week. The honest answer is no: Wix handles the technical basics well. Most Wix sites struggle because the setup is incomplete. This is the checklist we follow when optimising Wix sites for clients such as APE Finance, a Birmingham mortgage broker, and Birth From The Heart.
Foundations
1. Connect a custom domain and choose one version
Use your own domain, and make sure only one version (with or without www) is used.
2. Make sure the site is visible to search engines
In the Wix SEO settings, check that the site is set to be indexed, and that no individual page has “hide from search results” turned on by mistake.
3. Connect Google Search Console
Use Wix’s SEO tools to connect Search Console, and confirm the sitemap has been submitted. Then read the Page indexing report.
4. Clean up the URLs
Use short, descriptive page URLs such as /mortgage-advice-birmingham, not /copy-of-page-3. Add 301 redirects when you change a URL.
On-page SEO
5. Write a unique SEO title for every page
Put the main topic first and keep titles readable, roughly 50 to 60 characters.
6. Write a meta description that earns the click
Explain what the page offers and why someone should choose you.
7. Use one H1 per page
Wix makes it easy to style text as H1 by accident. Use one H1 for the page topic, then H2 and H3 for sections.
8. Give each page enough content
A service page with two sentences rarely ranks. Explain the service, who it is for, the process, prices or how to get a quote, and common questions.
9. Add alt text to images
Describe what the image shows. It helps accessibility and image search.
10. Link between your pages
Link services to each other and to relevant blog posts with descriptive anchor text.
Speed and experience
11. Compress images and limit heavy elements
Large background videos, many fonts and autoplay galleries slow Wix sites, especially on mobile.
12. Check mobile layout separately
Wix has a separate mobile editor. Hidden or overlapping elements on mobile are common and hurt engagement.
Local and trust signals
13. Set up Google Business Profile
Essential for local businesses. Keep name, address and phone consistent everywhere.
14. Add structured information
Show your address, opening hours and contact details clearly, and use Wix’s structured data options for your business type where available.
15. Publish helpful content regularly
Answer customer questions in blog posts and link them to your service pages.
When Wix is not the problem
In our experience the platform is rarely what holds a site back. Redesigning and restructuring content often helps more; we did exactly that for the charity Mor Media on Wix.

FAQ
Can a Wix website rank on the first page of Google?
Yes, when content, structure and technical setup are right and the competition is realistic.
Should I move from Wix to WordPress for SEO?
Usually not for SEO alone. Move only if you need features Wix cannot provide.
