How to Write Meta Descriptions That Get More Clicks (With 20 Examples)

Meta descriptions don’t directly change rankings, but they decide whether people click. Here is a simple formula, 20 examples by page type, and how to find the descriptions worth rewriting first.

A meta description is the short summary that often appears under your title in Google’s search results. It is not a direct ranking factor, so many site owners ignore it. That is a mistake. The description is your sales pitch in the results page. Two pages ranking in similar positions can get very different numbers of clicks depending on how clearly and persuasively they describe what the visitor will find. More clicks from the same rankings means more visitors, more enquiries and, over time, signals that your result satisfies searchers.

What a meta description is

It is an HTML tag in the head of the page: <meta name="description" content="...">. Visitors do not see it on the page itself. Google may display it in search results, or it may generate its own snippet from the page content if it thinks that better matches the search. Social networks and messaging apps sometimes use it too when a link is shared.

How long should a meta description be?

Google truncates snippets based on pixel width. On desktop, roughly 150 to 160 characters usually display; on mobile, slightly more can appear. Aim for 140 to 160 characters, with the most important information in the first 120 so it survives truncation.

A simple formula

What it is + who it is for or where + why choose it + a call to action.

Example for a local service: “Same-day boiler repairs across Stockport and South Manchester. Gas Safe engineers, fixed prices and no call-out fee. Book online or call now.”

Rules that make descriptions work

  1. Make each one unique. Duplicate descriptions are often ignored by Google and give searchers no reason to choose a page.
  2. Include the main keyword naturally. Google bolds words matching the search, which draws the eye.
  3. Match the intent. Informational searches want answers; commercial searches want reasons to trust and act.
  4. Be specific. Numbers, prices, locations, time frames and guarantees are more persuasive than adjectives.
  5. Use active language and a call to action. “Book”, “See”, “Get”, “Compare”, “Learn”.
  6. Be honest. If the description promises something the page does not deliver, visitors leave quickly.
  7. Avoid quotation marks. In some systems they can cut the description short.

Why Google ignores your description sometimes

Google rewrites snippets in a large share of cases, choosing text from the page that better matches the specific search. This is more likely for long-tail queries. You cannot stop it entirely, but you can make it less frequent: write descriptions that match your main keyword closely, and make sure the page’s opening paragraph is a clear summary too, because Google often pulls from there.

Which pages to prioritise

Do not start by rewriting every description on a large site. In Google Search Console’s Performance report, sort pages by impressions and look for those with a click-through rate below what you would expect for their position. Those pages are already visible; a better description can lift traffic within weeks. Start with your homepage, top service pages and the posts with the most impressions.

How to set descriptions on each platform

  • WordPress: Rank Math or Yoast snippet editor on each page or post, with default templates for post types.
  • Wix: page SEO basics, with patterns in SEO Settings. See SEO for Wix websites.
  • Squarespace: page SEO tab. See Squarespace titles and descriptions.
  • Shopify: “Search engine listing” on each product, collection and page.

Meta description mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving them blank on key pages.
  • Copying the same description across many pages.
  • Stuffing keywords.
  • Writing a description that is too vague: “Welcome to our website”.
  • Promising offers or prices that are out of date.

Descriptions and the bigger picture

A great description cannot rescue a page that does not answer the search. Think of it as the final step after the content, title and structure are right. Together with your title tag, it forms the “shop window” of every page. We review both in every on-page SEO audit, and they were part of the improvements on projects like CopierStaples and Durofy.

Frequently asked questions

Do meta descriptions affect rankings?

Not directly. They affect click-through rate, which affects how much traffic your rankings bring.

What happens if I leave the description blank?

Google generates a snippet from your page content, which may be less persuasive.

Should every page have a meta description?

Every important indexable page should. Low-value pages are less of a priority.

Can I use emojis in meta descriptions?

You can, and Google sometimes shows them, but use them sparingly and only if they suit your brand.
