Connecting Google Analytics 4 to Wix takes only a few minutes, but getting data you can trust takes a little more thought. Many Wix sites either track nothing useful or count every visit twice because GA4 was added in two places. This guide shows the clean way to connect GA4 and Google Tag Manager (GTM) through Wix’s Marketing Integrations, how to decide whether you need GTM at all, how to mark your important actions as key events, and how to test the setup before you rely on the numbers.
Key takeaways
- Use Wix’s built-in Marketing Integrations to connect GA4 with your measurement ID; avoid pasting the GA4 tag manually.
- Add Google Tag Manager only if you need extra tags, custom triggers or several marketing pixels in one place.
- Never send GA4 data through both the Wix integration and a GTM tag, or you will double count.
- Mark form submissions, bookings and purchases as key events so GA4 reports what matters.
- Test with GA4 DebugView and GTM Preview on the live domain before trusting reports.

GA4 vs Google Tag Manager: do you need both?
Google Analytics 4 is the reporting tool: it collects visits, pages, traffic sources and events, and shows you reports. Google Tag Manager is a container that loads tags (GA4, ad pixels, heatmap tools) based on rules you set, without editing site code each time.
| Your situation | Recommended setup |
|---|---|
| Small business wanting traffic and lead reports | GA4 through Wix Marketing Integrations only |
| Running Google Ads and Meta ads | GA4 via Wix integration, ad pixels via Wix integrations or GTM |
| Need custom events, scroll or click tracking | GTM via Wix integration, with GA4 configured inside GTM (and not also in Wix) |
| Agency managing many tags and tools | GTM as the single source of tags |
For most small businesses, GA4 alone through the Wix integration is enough, because Wix already sends useful eCommerce and booking events where supported. Add GTM when you have a clear reason.
What you need before you start
- A premium Wix plan and connected domain. Wix marketing integrations generally require both; check the current requirements on the Wix Help Center.
- A Google account with access to Google Analytics and, if needed, Tag Manager.
- A cookie consent plan. If you have visitors from the UK or EU, set up Wix’s cookie banner so tracking respects consent.
- Admin access to your Wix site dashboard.
It also helps to connect Google Search Console at the same time; our Google indexing guide explains why Search Console data and GA4 together give the full picture.
How to connect Google Analytics 4 to Wix
- Create a GA4 property. In Google Analytics, go to Admin, create a property for your business, and set your time zone and currency.
- Add a web data stream for your domain. Enhanced measurement can stay on; it tracks page views, scrolls, outbound clicks and more.
- Copy your measurement ID, which starts with G- and appears in the data stream details.
- Open your Wix dashboard and go to Marketing Integrations (usually under Marketing and SEO).
- Choose Google Analytics and click connect.
- Paste the measurement ID and save. Wix may also offer IP anonymisation and other options; choose according to your privacy policy.
- Publish your site if prompted, then visit it in another browser.
- Check Realtime in GA4. Within a few minutes you should see your own visit.
Wix’s own Help Center guide to connecting Google Analytics shows the current screens if the menu labels have changed.

How to add Google Tag Manager to Wix
- Create a GTM account and web container at tagmanager.google.com.
- Copy the container ID, which starts with GTM-.
- In Wix Marketing Integrations, choose Google Tag Manager, paste the container ID and save.
- Decide where GA4 lives. If you want GA4 managed inside GTM, add a Google tag in GTM with your measurement ID, and disconnect GA4 from the Wix integration. If you keep GA4 in Wix, do not add a GA4 tag in GTM.
- Add your other tags in GTM, such as ad conversion tags or a heatmap tool, with sensible triggers.
- Publish the GTM container. Changes in GTM do not go live until you publish a version.
Wix pushes a number of standard events to the data layer that GTM can use as triggers, such as eCommerce actions. The exact event names are listed in Wix’s documentation; use GTM Preview mode to see which events fire on your site rather than guessing. Google’s own Tag Manager developer documentation covers triggers and variables in depth.
Setting up key events for Wix forms, bookings and sales
GA4 calls important actions key events (previously conversions). Page views alone do not tell you whether your site is working; key events do. Typical key events for a Wix site:
- Lead form submitted on your contact or quote form. See our Wix Forms guide for form design that converts.
- Booking completed through Wix Bookings.
- Purchase in Wix Stores, which the Wix integration can report with revenue.
- Click to call or WhatsApp, tracked as outbound or link clicks.
- Newsletter sign-up.
To create a key event, find the event in GA4 under Admin and Events after it has fired at least once, then mark it as a key event. For actions that do not create a unique event, such as a thank-you page view, create a custom event in GA4 based on the page path, or use GTM to fire an event on the trigger you need.
How to test your Wix tracking
Never assume tracking works because a dashboard says “connected”. Test it:
- GA4 Realtime confirms data is arriving at all.
- GA4 DebugView, with the Google Tag Assistant enabled, shows each event and its parameters as you click around.
- GTM Preview mode shows which tags fired on each page and which did not.
- A test purchase or booking (using a coupon or test payment where possible) confirms eCommerce events and revenue values.
- Consent test: decline cookies and confirm tracking tags respect that choice.
Check again a week later in the standard reports. If page views look roughly double what you expect, or every session has two page views per page, you probably have duplicate tags.
Which GA4 reports matter for a Wix business?
GA4 has dozens of reports, and new users often give up because the interface feels overwhelming. For a small business website, five views answer most questions:
- Traffic acquisition (under Acquisition) shows which channels bring sessions: organic search, direct, social, paid and referral. Add your key events as a column to see which channels bring enquiries, not just visits.
- Pages and screens (under Engagement) lists your most viewed pages. Compare it with your service pages to spot important pages that get little attention.
- Landing page shows the first page people see. For SEO, this tells you which articles and service pages pull in search visitors.
- Key events by channel answers the most important question: where do customers come from?
- Monetisation (for Wix Stores) shows revenue, top products and purchase funnels when eCommerce events are flowing correctly.
Set a monthly reminder to review these, note two or three changes, and act on one. For example, if a blog post brings plenty of traffic but no enquiries, add a clearer call to action and an internal link to the relevant service page. If paid social brings visits but no key events, review the landing page before increasing the budget.
You can also build a simple Looker Studio dashboard from GA4 and Search Console if you want everything on one screen to share with a partner or team.
Common tracking mistakes on Wix
- Double counting from GA4 in Wix plus a GA4 tag in GTM or Custom Code.
- Pasting the gtag script into Custom Code instead of using the integration, which can miss Wix’s built-in events. Our guide to adding custom code to Wix explains when manual scripts make sense.
- Forgetting to publish the GTM container.
- Not excluding internal traffic, so your own visits inflate numbers.
- No key events, leaving you with traffic data but no idea which channels bring enquiries.
- Ignoring consent, which can create legal risk in some regions.
Analytics setup checklist
- GA4 property with correct time zone and currency
- Connected once only, via Wix integration or GTM
- Key events defined for leads, bookings and sales
- Internal traffic filtered
- Search Console linked to GA4
- Cookie consent tested
- DebugView and Preview tests passed

Frequently asked questions
Does Wix have built-in analytics?
Yes. Wix Analytics shows traffic, sales and behaviour in your dashboard. GA4 adds deeper reporting, comparisons with ad platforms and long-term data you control.
Can I connect GA4 to Wix on a free plan?
Marketing integrations generally require a premium plan and a connected domain. Check the Wix Help Center for the latest requirements.
Should I use the Wix integration or Google Tag Manager for GA4?
Use the Wix integration for simplicity. Use GTM if you need many custom tags, but then manage GA4 only in GTM to avoid double counting.
Why is GA4 showing no data from my Wix site?
Common causes are an incorrect measurement ID, an unpublished site, a cookie banner blocking tracking, or a free plan without integrations.
Can MIVAQ set up GA4 and GTM on my Wix site?
Yes. We install, configure and test GA4 and GTM, define key events and hand over a clear report, for a fixed price agreed after a free consultation.
