Local SEO for Service Businesses: What Actually Works

What we learned doing local SEO for a Bournemouth dog walker, an Oxfordshire home care provider and Cumbrian repair shops: the steps that consistently help local businesses get found.

Local SEO is how a plumber, a dog walker or a repair shop appears when someone nearby searches for their service. We have done this for very different businesses: K9 Daycare, a dog walker and home boarder in Bournemouth; Vine Living, a home care provider in Oxfordshire; and Tech Lab Repairs and RepairPod in Cumbria. The same principles worked each time.

1. One clear page per service

“Services” as a single page rarely ranks. Tech Lab Repairs has separate content for phones, laptops, MacBooks and consoles, each answering what people ask about that repair.

2. Say where you work, naturally

Mention the towns and areas you serve in titles, headings and content, as Vine Living does for Oxfordshire care. Avoid dozens of copy-paste town pages; they tend to be ignored.

3. Optimise titles and descriptions for local intent

A title like “Dog Walker and Home Boarding in Bournemouth” matches how people search far better than “Home”.

4. Build trust on the page

Show real photos, qualifications or regulator ratings (like a CQC rating for care), reviews and clear contact details.

5. Complete your Google Business Profile

Choose the right primary category, add services, opening hours and real photos, and keep information consistent with your website.

6. Earn genuine reviews

Ask satisfied customers for honest reviews and reply to them. Never buy reviews or post fake ones; it breaks Google’s policies and can get a profile suspended.

7. Make contacting you effortless on mobile

Click-to-call buttons, a short booking form and fast pages matter because most local searches happen on phones.

8. Keep the site maintained

For Tech Lab Repairs we have provided monthly support for around two years: updates, fixes and gradual SEO improvements. Consistency beats one-off bursts.

9. Fix technical basics first

None of this helps if the site is not indexed. Check our guide on why a website may not show on Google.
