If you want a genuinely free Shopify theme download, the safest place to get one is Shopify itself. The official Shopify Theme Store offers more than twenty free themes, built and maintained by Shopify, fully compatible with Online Store 2.0 and updated for new features. They cost nothing, carry no licence risk and are a strong foundation for a new store.
This article is part of our complete guide: How to Start a Shopify Store: The Complete Guide (2026).
This guide lists the official free Shopify themes in 2026, explains what each is suited to and shows how to install one in minutes. It is part of our Shopify themes free download guide. If you want a free theme customised to look like a premium store, our team can help.
How to download and install a free Shopify theme
- Log in to your Shopify admin and go to Online Store › Themes.
- Scroll to the theme library and choose Add theme › Explore free themes, or visit the Shopify Theme Store and filter by free.
- Select a theme and a style, then add it to your library.
- Click Customize to add your logo, colours, fonts, products and pages.
- Preview on desktop and mobile, then click Publish.
There is no ZIP file to download and nothing to upload. Free themes are added directly from Shopify, which also means they are safe.
Free Shopify themes vs premium themes
Free themes are fast, well-coded and supported by Shopify, but they offer fewer specialised features than premium themes, such as advanced mega menus, complex filtering layouts or built-in promotional tools. Many successful stores start with a free theme and add apps or custom sections as they grow. If you need more features out of the box, compare the premium Shopify themes you can try free.
The Horizon family of free themes
Shopify introduced the Horizon collection of free themes in 2025. Horizon themes use a newer architecture with more flexible blocks and layouts, giving merchants greater design freedom in the editor. They share a common foundation, with each theme offering a different starting style.

Frequently asked questions
Are Shopify free themes really free?
Yes. Official free themes cost nothing and are maintained by Shopify. You only pay your Shopify plan.
Which free Shopify theme is best?
Horizon and Dawn are excellent all-rounders. Industry-specific options such as Sense or Pitch for beauty, Taste or Savor for food, Dwell for home and Trade for B2B give you a better starting point.
Can I switch from a free theme to a premium theme later?
Yes. You can add a new theme, customise it and publish it when ready. Some settings and content need to be reconfigured, which we can handle for you.
Do free Shopify themes work for SEO?
Yes. Official free themes are fast and well-structured. SEO success depends more on content, structure and technical setup than on the theme.
